Care Instructions
Thankfully, caring for your Knickernappies products is just as easy as caring for the rest of your laundry!
How do I wash Knickernappies diapers?
Simply run a cold rinse to wash off most of the ickies and prevent stains from setting. Then wash on hot with 2 or 3 Tablespoons of detergent*. Then either dry in the dryer or hang dry.
First wash before use: no special instructions for the first wash, but I highly recommend drying in the dryer the first time and once a month or so afterwards. This does help to seal the PUL nice and tight.
*For detergent, the actual amount that is best for you may vary depending on machine and water quality. Most people find that 2 to 3 tablespoons works for a top-loading machine and about 2-3 teaspoons for a front-loading machine.
Do not use free & clear detergents. In general, these will cause buildup. Allen's Naturally, Country Save, Mountain Green, Tide, Tide Free, and Planet all work well.
Do not use fabric softener.
Do not use bleach as it can cause the PUL to fail. Bac-Out and Oxyclean can be used to prevent odors and staining.
How do I dry Knickernappies diapers?
You may dry them in the dryer or hang them to dry. If you choose to hang dry, go ahead and machine dry them once in a while to keep the PUL sealed.
Do I need to prep my Just-Hemp inserts?
Yes, the hemp for the Just-Hemp inserts is not prewashed so it will need 3-4 washings separate from your diapers. You may wash them with other laundry (towels, clothing, etc) as long as the detergent recommendations are followed.
It can take up to 8 washings for hemp to be fully absorbant. You may use the inserts prior to this, just remember that they aren't fully primed so you may need to change diapers more often.
Do I need to prep my LoopyDo inserts, SuperDo inserts, or Stay-Dry Hemp Doublers?
No. The hemp in these inserts has been prewashed so that it won't leave buildup on the microfiber or microfleece. These can be washed immediately with the rest of your diaper laundry. However, it will take 4-6 washings for these to become fully absorbant. You may use them in the meantime, but understand they aren't at their peak yet!
Can the Doorknob Diaper Pails be washed with my diapers?
Yes! Just wash and dry with your diapers.
How do I wash the nursing pads and menstrual pads?
Nursing pads can be washed with your baby's laundry or with your own. We do not recommend washing with diapers for sanitary reasons.
Menstrual pads, however, can be washed easily with diapers. You may want to rinse them first with cold water to prevent stains from setting but you can also skip this step. Simply toss them in the diaper pail, wash and dry with diapers. If you don't do diaper laundry, then they can be washed with towels or whatever laundry you feel comfortable washing them with. Use 1/2 the amount of detergent you'd normally use to keep your pads absorbant.

Knickernappies... The Story
My name is Heather and I work full time from home with my husband Shannon. We live in Oregon with our daughter, Camille. When she was a newborn, she had a persistant rash. Curing the rash led us to cloth diapering which in turn led to us sewing Knickernappies.
We're proud to say that all of our products are made in the USA.
Who Sews My Diapers?
I don't actually do much sewing anymore. Thankfully my business has grown a lot and I've been able to find some wonderful people to help me. All cutting and sewing are done in Oregon by people that I personally know and love.
All custom diapers are sewn by Caye. Here's what she says about herself: "I come from a family of artists from the South (Arkansas and Kansas). I was an art major in college and got a job at a plant nursery to pay my way through school. Twelve years later I am still working in the horticultural field while doing my art as a hobby and occasional part-time job. My husband is a writer from Connecticut and we met here in Oregon in 2001, fell in love, and were married in 2004." They had their first child in July 2007. Caye is now a work-at-home mom, sewing custom diapers for Knickernappies as well as many of her own creations.
Buy customs and see her work at www.hyenacart.com/knickernappies. I'm proud to support her so she can do what I do...stay home with our babies!
All instock diapers and accessories are sewn by a dear couple here in Oregon. They met and married while working together for another production sewing company. When that company outsourced to Mexico, they bought some equipment and started their own company. They are a delightful couple with a wonderful, highly paid staff that I'm thrilled to work with.
